In the estate planning world, we tend to say there are only 4 kinds of people in the world: Those who have already been caregivers. Those who are currently caregivers. Those who will be caregivers, and those who will need a caregiver.
So that includes everyone – including you. That’s why this topic is so very important.
Caregiving is a challenge – In fact if you’re called to care for a loved one in their later years – it may constitute the most challenging, stressful seasons of your life. It deserves some thought and preparation from both you and your loved ones.
How do I know? I’ve been in those shoes – twice – first with my father and now with my own mother. This is personal for me. And I thought it might help to share those and a few other stories from the caregiving front with you today. Also going to share what type of planning options are available and what you might expect if you choose not to plan at all.
One in Five Americans is currently in some role of unpaid caregiving – maybe full time or part time or on top of other issues in their life and it’s unpaid work. That’s 53 million people and there is no sign that this trend will end anytime soon.
This is the Silver Tsunami that I’ve talked about on the show – this giant wave is building and coming our way. I want you to be better prepared and equipped for the challenges that come with aging and caring for a parent or loved one. The Silver Tsunami – you know what a tsunami is – it’s a wave that comes into shore and wipes out everything in its path. That’s the term given to the graying of America – we baby boomers are getting older and in the coming years more than ½ of the country’s population will be over 65. That’s going to change things here and make it more complicated to get certain kinds of care.
This means we need to be prepared and likely better prepared for the work that’s ahead – not only to meet the challenge – in both mind/emotional, and physical as well as the time and financial commitment that may be there – not to mention balancing other parts of your life.
So in this episode, I plan to share some stories with you as you look after both your own personal needs and your family’s needs in the future.
